The one about….Spring

The Spring Equinox – day and night, light and dark in equilibrium – brings first a calmness and then a burst of energy. There’s a time for everything. Why fight it? Resolutions and good intentions to start projects are doomed to failure in the dead of winter when, surely, we are meant to hunker down inside, reflect and go slow? If you want to start a project, a good habit or make a change, now is the right time. You won’t want to fight it. Just go with the flow, the surge of energy and you’ll be pulled along.

So here are six simple ways to celebrate the season and establish good habits – one for every day of the week and a day off to just ‘be’.

1, Sow seeds or give your garden some TLC. Even a kitchen windowsill pot will give you pleasure and a sense of accomplishment. There were plenty of people out and about at our gardening club plant sake today, intending to do just that.

2. Get up early and watch the sun rise. The light is calling you.

3. Have a bonfire. When isn’t it the right time for one of these – except in the middle of the day when your neighbours have their washing out, obviously. Now that the family are home from for the holidays. we’ll be firing up the firepit at dusk and sitting outside with a drink and a blanket. (Note to self. I won’t be marking books past 8pm in the evening!) It’s the beginning of a shift from indoors to outdoors.

4. Do some Spring cleaning. Cleaning can boost your energy. Open the windows, let fresh air in and the dust and clutter out. Windows, kitchen cupboards, charity shop donations will all be getting some of my energy.

5. Go outside. Many of us benefitted during lockdown ( remember that?) from a daily walk often round the same circuit of our neighbourhoods, appreciating the tiny differences from day to day. If you’ve let that ritual slide, start it up again.

6. With the balance and clear headedness that the equinox brings, start a project. I have one in particular in mind. More of this later in the year.

Whatever you’re up to, I hope the sun shines on your back, the rain falls on your garden and the seeds you sow now bring you a bountiful harvest.
